Dog breeds: a shepherd Maremma Abruzzese

Like all other dog breeds, including the Maremma Abruzzese shepherd has some specific characteristics as regards both the appearance that character.

The breed of Maremma Abruzzese shepherd belongs to the family of shepherds and herders, particularly the group of large white dogs in Central Europe. His name shows clearly what were the areas where it was most prevalent (Tuscan Maremma and Abruzzi), and this particular race will have testimonies from Roman times: in the first century AD the Roman writer Columella already talked about it as a great defender of flocks against the attacks of wolves.

The nature of the Maremma Abruzzese is indeed that of watchdog and guardian of the flocks, whose role in the past was also suitable because of its white coat, which at night allowed the shepherds to distinguish it from the wolves. His current status is therefore a reflection of its history of past centuries to act as guardian and to defend their flocks from the enemy. It is therefore not a particularly affectionate race, probably because in the past, the pastor Maremma Abruzzese was not used to stroking or various affectations by the master, and was brought to the flock that had become attached more to protect that man. In the past the puppy Maremma Abruzzese was now accustomed to "work" which then had to make, and the pastor made him live with the sheep and lambs, so that it learns to see in a flock can not prey, but a sort of family to be protected and manage, if necessary, independently, by abolishing his instinct for which he would see sheep and lambs in the meal palatable. It is therefore with his flock that the shepherd Maremma Abruzzese used to establish a closer contact, and although nowadays many puppies are trained for the purpose for which they were educated in the past, this does not mean that they have completely lost some peculiarities of its ancestral character, which sometimes leads them to be shy and less sociable than other breeds used as pets.

Like many other breeds, especially large breed dogs races, not the pastor Maremma Abruzzese is suitable to live in cramped apartments or in any environment, because by its nature would have brought more than other races, the great outdoors. Those who decide to adopt a Maremma Abruzzese shepherd, therefore, must know that it would be advisable to have a house with a look, and must take into account that in all likelihood will not have to do with a role which will restrict many affectionate attentions . For its part, however, the Maremma Abruzzese shepherd dog is a type which has a certain independence and authority, qualities that make it definitely a good breed of guard dogs.

As for external appearance, the pastor is no Maremma Abruzzese doubt a race with a charm, thanks to the long white coat and dark eyes that, by contrast, stand out even more. It is also a breed of large amounts (the weight of males is between 35 and 45 kg, that of females between 30 and 40 kg), majestic and strong construction.
